Commercial Case Study – Leonard Cheshire Disability
Read MoreClient Leonard Cheshire Disability Location Mickley Hall Sheffield Project Dining room floor replacement Firstly we had to strip the whole floor area 205ms of hardwood parquet flooring, once we had taken it all up we could then start to take up the timber structure which was at least 100 years old, starting with the existing floor boards, and then the timber joists which were only 3 inch X 2 inch in section, so they wouldn’t of taken the weight of power chairs that some service uses were using for much longer.
Once the whole floor was taken up we began removing all of the rubble and debris within the floor void. We could then start to build the new timber structure by fitting bigger section joist and spanning them onto the supporting wall, we also formed two accessible traps in the floor so as to give access to any services.
We then fitted the under floor insulation, and overlaid the whole floor with a ply board covering screwed at 200mm centre’s this would give the structural strength need to take the weight of power chairs etc.
After the floor was completed we fitted a small length of worktop along with a sink, and the base unit for storage of cutlery.
With mdf 175mm skirting board was fitted to the perimeter of the dining room, which was painted at a later date.
The last thing to go down was the FX wood effect poly safe none slip vinyl floor, which really made a differences.
Gwen Webster care home manager told us that, “Our dining room floor had become a safety hazard as the hardwood parquet floor had started lifting, and we needed the hole floor replacing as soon as possible’’After a meeting with John and he’s surveyor to discuss time frames and what we needed to do to put the floor right and make it safe again, I decided to use John for the job as he had already completed a 12 week contract renewing our fire doors, for our annual fire risk assessment. Once John’s team started work everything went quickly, smoothly and most importantly, without any hassle or major disruption, we will look forward to using John again for future work at our home.”

Commercial Case Study – Leonard Cheshire Disability
Read MoreAs part of Leonard Cheshire disabilities ongoing modernisation schemes to various sites, a lounge refurbishment and new kitchen for those with special needs was required at Green Acres site in Sutton Coldfield Birmingham.
LoungeWe had to disconnect and make safe all electrical sockets and lighting, then the existing suspended ceiling was taken down along with the timber roof light surround which was stopping natural light.
All walls were stripped of wallpaper, all first fix electrical work was finished, the extended half of the room was re-plastered completely as the original plaster was completely rotten and was falling off the walls.
The original skirting board was taken off, and once the walls were plastered and lined with lining paper, the new skirting was fitted then a bulkhead was built to accommodate the new suspended ceiling and to give a finish between the lounge and the dining room.
The existing doors were taken off and vision panels were fitted with fire rated George wire glass. The floor was then latexed in preparation of the new commercial non-slip wood effect vinyl floor.
The new roof light dome was fitted which allowed more natural light into the room, and finally the room was decorated and the new vinly floor was laid.
Kitchen
We had to disconnect and make safe all electrical sockets and lighting and plumbing then the existing kitchen was taken out, all the existing tiles were taken off the walls.
The existing door and frame was taken out and the opening was enlarged to allow for adequate wheel chair access. A new UPVC double glazed window was fitted so as to give more natural light within the kitchen. All walls were then patched and plaster skimmed complete ready to take a paint finish.
Once all walls were completely dry, we then went onto fitting the new kitchen with a rise and fall sink-hob so as the less able-bodied users would be able to fully operate all appliances.
A splash back tile was fitted and the kitchen was painted throughout including the new door and frame. The floor was covered with a non-slip commercial vinyl floor, including a cap cove skirting board for hygiene and easy cleaning.
On completion of the works a full builders clean was undertaken and all relevant certificates appliance manuals were given to the client.
Mrs. S. Flaherty, housekeeper, told us, “that’ they needed to brighten up the lounge as the residents spent a lot of time in there.
It was also important that they were given a kitchen in which the service users had the opportunity to cook and bake various food, but they wouldn’t be able to do that with the existing kitchen, so they needed a kitchen that would be more suitable for the less able bodied service users.
John came down to site to discuss what they could do for us and how long it would take him to complete, as we had already been using John for other numerous building & refurbishment work around the home we decided to use him for both of theses projects.
Now the work is completed, the residents are a lot happier to sit in the lounge and they also have the opportunity to cook and bake various food. We couldn’t have been happier with what John and his team have done for us”.

Commercial Case Study – Leonard Cheshire Disability
Read MoreAs Leonard Cheshire were relocating their office from unit 6a to unit 8, we carried out some alterations to unit 8 before they relocated.
This involved forming a stud partition wall from one end of the room to the other, which would then create two additional offices for storage and office staff.
We fitted some additional fire/smoke alarms, along with a complete intruder alarm system. In unit 6a we had to bring the inside back to where it was originally before they moved in, this involved disconnecting the power supply and making safe of all the electrics.Once this was complete we could then take down the existing partition wall that they had erected when they first moved in, all walls, skirting boards and doors received a fresh coat of paint.
All the existing carpet was lifted and the floor was replaced with a new commercial hard wearing carpet, we then performed a periodic survey of all electrics and gave the client the NICEIC electrical certificates.
Mr. Stevenson projects manager told us that, “Leonard Cheshire was relocating there offices as they needed more space in the office, but moving from the one office to the other needed to be done efficiently and smoothly as possible.
After a meeting with John and his surveyor to discuss time frames and the schedule of works, I decided to use John for the job as he had already completed numerous contracts on other Leonard Cheshire sites around the country, to a high standard.
Once John’s team started work everything went quickly, smoothly and most importantly, without any hassle or major disruption, I will look forward to placing more order with John and completing more contracts in the near future.”

Client Leonard Cheshire Disability Location Alfreton, Derbyshire Project Toilet alteration – building & refurbishment. For many people living in Derbyshire, public places and community facilities are not accessible because their personal care needs cannot be met in standard accessibility toilets (disabled toilets).
This affects all those people who require the support of carers and specialist facilities, such as a hoist, to help make their lives easier.
To make this possible we had to make safe and disconnect the existing plumbing as well as strip out and take down the diving wall between the male toilets and the standard accessible toilet (disabled toilet) We also had to alter the existing toilet cubicles to give us the room required to form a larger toilet area to accommodate a hoist.Next we formed the new walls from timber stud, insulation and plasterboard, followed by the existing suspended ceiling, which was then altered around the new walls.
Once those walls were in place, the floor was latexed ready to receive the new commercial none slip vinyl floor. We fitted the new toilet suite.
In addition we changed the inset bowls and taps to the vanity unit within the female toilets, all walls were then painted throughout so as to give the toilet a new fresh look.
On completion of the works a full builders clean was completed and then the job was handed over to the client.
Mr. C. Stevenson of Leonard Cheshire disability told us, “We needed to make the toilet fully accessible and this would involve alterations to the original layout so as to accommodate the new hoist and give a larger toilet. After a meeting with John on site to discuss exactly was what required by ourselves and Derbyshire Council, I decided to use John to do the work as he had already completed numerous building & refurbishment contracts on other Leonard Cheshire sites around the country, to a high standard and a very professional manner. Once John’s team started work everything went quickly, smoothly and most importantly, without any hassle or major disruption, I will look forward to working with John and his team in the near future”.
