Client Ricochet Ltd – Channel 5 Cowboy Builders. Location Sabrina Rd, Wolverhampton. Project Traditional roof design & build. The producer of Channel 5’s Cowboy Builders programme approached us to discuss a property that a local builder had left unfinished.
The roof had been finished but wasn’t the correct pitch and it didn’t comply with the local planning authority approval.
The whole of the lean to roof at the rear of the property had to be taken back off, including all roof tiles and the velux windows.
Once the whole roof was exposed we could start to redesign it, get the right trusses ordered to achieve the right pitch and plan the re-build.
The following week the trusses were delivered to site and the re-build task began. We only had five days to get the timber work completed due to the ‘reveal date’ getting closer and the owners moving back in.
Edward Robinson series producer for Cowboy Builder told us, “With the ‘reveal date’ only a few days away, we knew we needed to get the roof on and sealed in so as the works inside the property could be started and not held up.However, redesigning the roof and getting the timber roof trusses made and delivered to site was proving difficult in the time span we had. As a result we decided to speak with one or two other building contractors and that’s when we came across Apple Solutions.
After the first initial site meeting with John his team and the local building inspector, it was clear that John would be able to advise us on the design which would give the correct pitch needed, and most of all, rebuild the roof in the time scale we had.Once John’s team started work everything went quickly, smoothly and most importantly, without any hassle or major disruption.
Now the roof is finished it’s the right pitch and it complies with local authority planning approval. The revealing was on time and the owner of the property was truly happy.

Residential Case Study – Two Storey Extension for Mr & Mrs Smelt

Client Mr & Mrs Smelt Location Sheldon Birmingham. Project Two storey domestic extension Mr & Mrs. Smelt approached us to discuss their proposed two-storey extension after having spoken to other builders that did not meet with their expectations.
To create the required additional two rooms we demolished the existing garage to make room for the proposed play room which would lead into the kitchen via a door, which we later changed for a stable door, so whilst Mrs. smelt was in the kitchen she could keep the top part open and keep an eye on the children.
All existing underground clay piping was replaced with 4 inch plastic, and a new manhole was fitted once the drainage was completed and past off by the local building Inspector we then began to build the new concrete floor, followed by scaffolding which was erected to allow the completion of the brickwork up to roof level.
The next step was to break into the existing roof and build the new roof structure, which would form the new bedroom and extension to the existing bedroom, giving Mrs. and Mrs. Smelt the extra room they so needed.
In addition to the structural work, we also extended the central heating system to accommodate three extra radiators, updated the electrics including new lighting and sockets, completed all the carpentry work such as skirting boards, internal doors, hand rail balustrade, loft hatches, boxing in of all hot and cold pipes, and an extension to the existing staircase and landing area so as to comply with building regulations.
The existing space underneath the stairs was then opened up to allow for the creation of a cloakroom/WC as well as some valuable space used to house the washing machine and tumble dryer.
In addition to the structural work, we also took care of the additional heating, electric, carpentry, plastering and final finishing touches so that the clients had nothing to do other than decorate and then start enjoying the extra space.
Mr. & Mrs. Smelt told us, “With a new baby on the way, we knew we needed more space in our home, but moving house wasn’t an option. So, we looked into having an extension built and after speaking with one or two builders we came across Apple Solutions.
After a few initial discussions about what we we’re after, it was clear that John would be able to build us the extension we so badly needed and do so on time so that we weren’t in a mess when the baby arrived.

Client Mansell Construction Services Ltd Location Aston – Handsworth, Birmingham Project Midland Heart Housing Association Regeneration programme Building & Refurbishment Contract. This project was awarded to Mansell Construction Services Ltd – A Balfour Beatty Company.
Handsworth and Aston are part of a large regeneration project, which has already seen improved safety, environmental and social activities.
As part of this regeneration Midland Heart has brought to life a range of traditional Victorian homes, many of which for the first time in 20 years are being brought back into use as family homes.
Once Mansell Construction Services Ltd had secured the contract they decided to place the sub-contract building & refurbishment package with us on three different properties within Aston and Handsworth.
Firstly we completed all soft demolition, taking down of existing load bearing walls, chimney breasts, ceilings, stripping the walls of all existing rotten plaster. We then moved onto the garden cleared and removed all old slabs,debris and scrubs.
After the back garden and the inside of the property was cleared completely and safe to work in, we then began the structural works, re -building of window bays, fitting of large steel beams, carpentry work, timber floors, hand rails and balustrades, doors, door frames skirting boards, ceiling and floor joists.
In addition we completed all ceramic floor and wall tiling, underground drainage, boundary walls, laying new slabs, wrought iron gates and all landscaping.
Projects manger Mr.G.Brooks of Mansell Construction Services Ltd told us, “We needed to move fast on this project as we are behind with the programme.
After a first initial meeting with John and he’s management team he advised us that they would be able to complete the works on time and in budget and to a high standard, having used John in the past on three other contracts, we were convinced he would complete the work and not let us down..
