A disabled bathroom and wet room provides access to toilets and washing facilities for any disabled staff you have or disabled patrons who may be using your commercial premises. In some cases you may find that you are required by law to provide access to a bathroom that has been specially adapted for disabled use.
Huge amounts of research and testing has gone into the development of plans and designs for disabled bathrooms to ensure that those using the room will encounter no difficulties. And this covers bathrooms to accommodate wheelchair users, those with limited vision or strength, and individuals who have suffered a severe injury and are only temporarily disabled.
There are now British Standards in place that govern the design of disabled access bathrooms and wet rooms. The BS8300 quality standard regulates the plans of bathrooms to meet the needs of disabled people, along with Building Regulations developed by the industry.
The designs require that a disabled bathroom is fitted out with easy access – whether through being positioned on the first floor of your building or close to a lift entrance and exit. The heights of toilets and washbasins are also closely controlled and must be positioned close to each other.
Other important elements include grab rails so that users can support themselves, an alarm cord in case of emergency, and a shower chair at an easy to reach level. The material used for the flooring must be slip resistant and the dimensions of the bathroom must allow a wheelchair user to manoeuvre themselves round.
The door of the bathroom or wet room must also be clearly visible for the partially-sighted, and must be easy to open outwards so that a wheelchair user will still be able to close it once they have entered the room.
